This collection contains one scrapbook documenting events in the social life of the Hitch family of Savannah, Georgia from 1900 to 1930. Robert M. Hitch was mayor of Savannah from 1937-1939. The majority of the items in the scrapbook are newspaper clippings regarding births, deaths, marriages and public social engagements of the family. Also included are church programs from the Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah; invitations to weddings, parties, dinners, school gatherings and other social events; school reports; telegrams; and letters. The deaths of John William Hitch, 1893-1935 (Brother of Robert M. Hitch), Dr. Newton Farmer Walker (Father-in-law of R.M. Hitch), M.B. Fall, Albert Hayne Walker, Nina Hitch (Sister of R.M. Hitch) are all documented with obituaries, tributes, telegrams and memorials, as are the weddings of RMH, Sr. to Virginia Eppes Walker and Virgina Eppes Hitch to Benjamin Alexander Oxnard, Jr. There are articles relating to the social debut of Virginia Eppes Hitch, 1922; the appointment of Calvin M. Hitch as General Consul in Basel, Switzerland; the 1929 anniversary celebration of Casmir Pukasi's death at which Robert M. Hitch, Sr. delivered an address, the election and tenure of RMH, Sr. as Chairman of Charity Hospital's and Nurses Training Schools' $50,000 building fund campaign, golfing in Georgia from 1926-1930; Yale University football, fraternities and the theft of a Yale fence by the Harvard Lampoon, 1927. There is a letter and some verse from poet Ralph Methven Thomas. Also included in the scrapbooks are four undated, black and white photographs: three depict Margery L. Hitch with one of her daughters. One depicts a young boy; probably RMH, Jr. Additionally there is a dyed blue (probable goose or turkey) feather with a white "Y" affixed to it taped to one page in the scrapbook.

Robert Mark Hitch (1872-1940) was born in Morvan, Brooks County, Georgia. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mercer University in 1892 and was admitted to the bar later that year. He moved to Savannah in 1893 and entered the law firm of Garrard, Meldrim and Newman. He established his own law firm in 1898. Hitch served as president of the Savannah Bar Association, was a member of the Georgia General Assembly (1902-1902), and was mayor of Savannah from 1937 until 1938. From the...

The Hitch family resided in Savannah, Georgia in the late 19th and early 20th century. The central figure of the Hitch family was Robert M. Hitch. Born to Dr. Robert Marcus Hitch and Martha Serena Hitch, nee Fall, in Morven, Georgia on February 14, 1872, he attended Morven Academy followed by Mercer University.
